About Us

aboutus2.pngMoores Hill Estate is a boutique family operated wine producer located in the beautiful Tamar Valley, Tasmania. We specialise in estate grown single vineyard wines of depth, quality and personailty.

Our tiny vineyard is located on a beautiful northeast-facing hillside near the sleepy town of Exeter. Established 13 years ago Moores Hill is an ideal location to plant grapes. The site is at 120m above sea level and is part of a ridge system that rings the valley floor below giving the site good aspect, elevation and drainage. As the crow flies we are 5 km from the Tamar River and 30 km from Bass Strait making us one of the coolest sites on the West Tamar - ideal for the slow and gentle ripening of our precious grapes.

Tasmania posesses some of Australia’s true cool to cold climate wine regions. Moores Hill, situated in the West Tamar region produces wines that reflect our unique climate. Our winters are cold summers mild and our site experiences approximately 1150 heat degree days and around 700mm annual rainfall.

The original vineyard were first planted in 1997 and today we have 4.9ha under vine of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and a very small amount of Cabernet and Merlot.

Each block in our immaculately kept vineyard has a very specific microclimate that produces distinctive wines with personality and character. We have the advantage of soil banks that retain just enough residual heat even in the coldest conditions that we have never yet suffered from frost - touch wood! Our site yields a truly magical combination of aspect, soil type and microclimate allowing our fruit to ripen slowly and evenly yielding wines of exceptional quality.

Our aim is to make wines of distinction and quality reflecting the unique terroir of our site. We make no compromises to quality both in the vineyard and in the winemaking process. Today Julian Allport, Fiona Weller and Lance Weller run Moores Hill with a focus on sustainable viticulture and winemaking and ethical business practices.
